Typography

Before you ship

A practical checklist for type decisions. Work through it before handing off or publishing a design.

Scale and Hierarchy

A defined type scale is in use — no arbitrary font sizes
Hierarchy is clear: heading, subheading, and body are visually distinct
The minimum number of type sizes needed are used — no redundant levels
Hierarchy reads without colour — size and weight alone carry the structure

Readability

Body text line-height is between 1.5 and 1.7
Line length (measure) falls between 55 and 75 characters
Paragraph spacing is greater than line-height to distinguish paragraphs clearly
No body text smaller than 15px on screen

Type Pairing and Weight

No more than two typefaces are used in the design
Typeface pairing creates contrast without conflict (e.g. serif headline, sans body)
Weight contrast is used purposefully — bold is reserved for emphasis

Alignment and Spacing

Text alignment is consistent throughout — left-aligned body text as a default
Letter-spacing on all-caps labels has been increased for readability
Display type tracking has been tightened at large sizes

Accessibility

All body text meets WCAG AA contrast (4.5:1 minimum)
All large text meets WCAG AA contrast (3:1 minimum)
Font sizes are set in rem, not px, to respect user browser preferences
Design has been tested at 200% zoom with no content clipped or hidden
